The WayTrac MDR is a small, economical, self-contained recorder for logging aircraft motion directly onto large capacity SD Cards that are conveniently transferred to computers for archiving, graphical flight reconstruction and analysis.

The WayTrac MDR weighs only 14 ounces and mounts in a standard 2.25" instrument hole, yet it has a full suite of sensors for recording every aspect of aircraft motion. Installation is as simple as mounting the recorder and supplying power. Pitot/static connections are optional and may use a dedicated Pitot/static probe where regulatory issues exist.

The WayTrac MDR may be configured to record any or all of the following:

  • GPS time
  • GPS latitude
  • GPS longitude
  • GPS altitude
  • GPS ground speed
  • Airspeed
  • Acceleration in 3 axes
  • Rotation rates in 3 axes
  • Magnetic heading
  • pressure altitude
  • Cabin pressure
  • Outside air temperature
  • Engine (cabin) noise level
  • External switch inputs (4)
  • External switch or logic inputs (4)
  • External analog inputs (4 at 0-3.3V)
  • Pilot event markers
A Windows compatible program initializes SD cards for use by the MDR and copies logs from SD cards to permament files in a number of formats. Logs may be copied to a binary format for archiving and reprocessing in the future. Logs may be copied to a special MDR format for input to programs written to make full use of the capabilities of the recorder. A readable text format is available for inspecting the data and for copying it into spreadsheets. The International Glider Commission (IGC) format* is supported for use by programs that reconstruct and analyze glider flights. Future formats will be added as the need arises.

This recorder is not certified. However, uncertified equipment may be used in light sport and home-built/experimental aircraft. Furthermore, indications are that field approvals will be accepted by the FAA for other aircraft. We invite inquiries from manufacturers interested in adding this instrument to their equipment lists.

* Not yet IGC certified.
